It is important, however, to understand how our brain responds to uncertainty as this understanding can enlighten us and aid in navigating life's unpredictability.
Biologically, our brains crave predictability. This preference stems from a deep-rooted survival mechanism that encourages our brains to plan and anticipate, helping us to react efficaciously to potential threats. When faced with uncertainty, a part of our brain called the amygdala activates our body's stress response. This can lead to feelings of unease, apprehension, and over time, may result in obsessive thoughts.
The Nature of Obsessive Thoughts
Imagine a piece of junk mail. It's there, unimportant, unwanted, yet impossible to dismiss until dealt with. This is an apt metaphor for what we term as 'junk' or 'intrusive' thoughts. Intrusive thoughts are spontaneous, unwelcomed thoughts that can cause significant distress, particularly when these thoughts revolve around negative or worrisome outcomes. They seem to arise from the crevices of our anxieties and manifest into our conscious thinking, often leaving us feeling distressed and vulnerable.
These intrusive thoughts can be relentless, not only presenting us with our least desired outcome but repetitively doing so. They can steal our peace of mind, leaving us in a state of constant fragility and unease. If not addressed, these thoughts can develop into Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), an anxiety disorder characterized by persistent, unwanted thoughts or fears.

Our brain struggles to come to terms with the unknown, automatically reverting to identifying potential threats or negative outcomes as a precautionary measure. Being aware of the reasons behind intrusive and obsessive thoughts is the first step towards dealing with uncertainty. It allows you to separate yourself from your thoughts, understanding them as mere products of an overactive protective mechanism rather than reflections of your deepest fears.
ERP is a method of changing your response to an anxiety-producing stimulus by purposefully encountering it, without giving in to the impulse to avoid or escape. Another is cognitive restructuring, a technique that helps replace negative thought patterns with more positive, accurate ones.
Mindfulness exercises, like meditation, can also build resilience to uncertainty. Mindfulness helps us to stay present rather than ruminating about potential threats in the future. Essentially these practices help to train the brain to accept and live in the present rather than worrying about the unknown.
